What is the clean beauty revolution?

What is the clean beauty revolution?

Every beauty blogger knows that you can’t have a fabulous makeup look without proper lash and skin care. The products we use on our skin and lashes are what set the foundation for our cosmetics, and for the best results, we need to invest in the highest quality we can. And, no, that doesn’t mean you have to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on products every month! It simply means that when it comes to lash and skincare products, we need to start paying attention to the ingredients.

The scary thing is, today, many products still contain harmful or even toxic ingredients! This is especially scary when we realise that as our body’s largest organ, our skin absorbs so much of what we put onto it into our bloodstream! As beauty gurus and consumers become more aware of this, the beauty industry is finally starting to respond, and so the clean beauty revolution is growing!

What is clean beauty?

Simply put, clean beauty products contain no potentially harmful chemicals. This is a much better approach not only for our own health but for the health of the planet, too. When we consider how many of these products are washed down the drain into our water systems, it’s clear that choosing clean, non-toxic beauty products is super important. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as looking for a green label with words like “eco”, “bio” or “natural”.

How can I tell if a beauty product is clean?

You’ve probably seen the terms “green”, “eco-friendly”, “organic” and “natural” used more and more as the clean beauty revolution gains popularity. However, these terms all mean slightly different things, and none of them technically mean that the product is 100% clean!

Here’s what each term actually means:

  • Sustainable beauty: The manufacturers comply with high environmental and social standards.
  • Green beauty: Similar to sustainable beauty, but relating specifically to the environmental aspect. Also called “eco-friendly”.
  • Natural: Ingredients have natural origins and are not man-made.
  • Organic: Ingredients were not grown using pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilisers and do not contain GMOs.
  • Clean: Products that contain no toxic or potentially harmful ingredients.

It’s important to note that while many of these terms are used freely by beauty companies, there is little regulation governing what does and doesn’t constitute as clean, natural, etc.

How to find 100% clean beauty products

There’s no doubt that clean beauty is a fast-growing trend, which is great news for us consumers! The problem lies in companies using “green-washing” tactics to trick us into believing a product is clean or green when really it isn’t.

The best thing you can do is learn to read the label. We wrote an entire article on harmful ingredients to avoid in skincare products with a complete list of ingredients to look out for.
