Can I Use Eyelash Serum with Lash Extensions?

“Can I use eyelash serum with lash extensions?”  It’s a question I get asked all the time so I thought I’d address it once and for all in this week’s blog post. And while the short answer is YES, the long answer is a little more complicated.

Lash serums containing oils will dissolve your lash glue, causing your extensions to fall out prematurely. That being said, some lash artists recommend using lash serum to ensure a healthier lash to attach individual lash extensions to. Here’s how it works….

Eyelash serum provides a strong foundation for lash extensions

Unlike false lashes which are glued onto the lash line in one, long strip, lash extensions are applied to individual lashes. For this reason, it’s extremely important that the natural lashes themselves are strong enough to hold the weight of the extension without breaking or falling out.

This is where eyelash serum comes in. Lash serum works to strengthen the lash from root to tip so that it doesn’t break or fall out prematurely.

Understanding your lash cycle

To understand how lash serum works, it’s important to understand the lash growth cycle.

Lashes grow in three phases:

  • Anagen phase - Eyelashes are growing from the root. This phase lasts 30-45 days.
  • Catagen phase - The hair follicle shrinks during this phase and no growth or regrowth can occur. This lasts 7-14 days. If a lash falls out during this phase, the follicle will need to wait until the next phase before a new lash can form.
  • Telogen phase - Lash is fully grown and will remain on the lid until it falls out. This can last up to 100 days.

If lashes fall out in the Catagen phase, they will not start growing again until the follicle opens up again, which can take up to 2 weeks. If lashes fall during the final phase they will need to start the process again from phase 1. Even worse, if a lash is brittle and breaks it will need to wait until the entire lash falls out and is replaced, which may take up to 100 days.

As lash serum results in a healthy lash line, there will be more available lashes on which to attach extensions. They will also be less likely to fall out prematurely, which means when a lash does eventually fall out naturally, it will regrow quickly according to the natural cycle of your lashes.

Take a break

Well-trained lash technicians will recommend taking a yearly break from your extensions. This is to give your lashes a break from constant stress under the extensions and allow them to experience a full, natural lash cycle. Many women avoid this break for fear of a thin lash look. However, using a high-quality lash serum will allow you to have the fullest, lushest set of natural lashes possible during your yearly lash break. In fact, many women are so impressed by the results of eyelash serum that they opt to embrace their natural lash look instead of going back to lash extensions.
