7 Harmful Ingredients To Avoid In Skincare Products

7 Harmful Ingredients To Avoid In Skincare Products

In this week’s blog post I’ve decided to address a really important topic. My goal with EVEDARE is to empower women to feel more confident and beautiful. However, as I’ve started learning more about sustainability and how to live a greener lifestyle, I’ve realised that I can also use this platform to empower women with the tools to educate themselves about sustainability too.

And for me, the easiest way to do this is by sharing how I’ve transformed my beauty regime to be more natural and sustainable. So this week I’m sharing 7 ingredients to avoid in cosmetics and skincare products.

Many of the ingredients commonly found in cosmetic products have been shown to be harmful to our health. Your skin is your body’s largest organ which easily absorbs substances into your bloodstream which is why it’s so important to be careful about what ingredients we apply to our skin. Not only that but when washed down the drain many of these harmful chemicals end up in our oceans and other natural water sources.

That being said, reading the ingredient list on any cosmetics packaging can be both confusing and overwhelming. There are often dozens of ingredients and, let’s be honest, most of them we’ve never heard of - let alone are able to pronounce!

That’s why I’m going to make it easy for you. I’ll outline the top ingredients to avoid when purchasing your beauty products to ensure your beauty regime is not only safe for you, but for the environment too. And stick around to the end - I’ve included a printable cheat sheet that you can keep in your purse so you can always check which ingredients to look out for when you’re out shopping.

Artificial Colors

Many cosmetic products, particularly makeup but also lotions and serums, have added synthetic colors. Look out for D&C followed by a number. The D&C represents “Drugs and cosmetics” while the number represents a certain color. For example, D&C Blue 2. These colorants are considered a carcinogen in the European Union and have subsequently been banned - so watch out for these!

Sodium Laureth Sulfate

Also called SLS, this chemical is found in almost all body wash products as well as mascara, shampoo, acne face washes and a variety of other cosmetic products. It’s used as a foaming agent and although it is FDA approved, it has been shown to cause skin irritation. When reacting with certain other chemicals, it’s also known to form nitrosamines, a carcinogen.

BHA & BTA

BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are preservatives that have been shown to be harmful to your body when absorbed. Studies have suggested that BHA causes cancer, while BTA causes kidney and liver damage. They are commonly found in makeup, moisturizers and other cosmetics.

Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is a known cancer-causing chemical. It can also cause skin reactions and weaken our immune system. Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives can be found in nail polish, body washes, conditioners, shampoos, cleansers and makeup products.

Ethanolamines (MEA, DEA, TEA)

These chemicals are found in a range of cosmetic products including soaps, hair dyes, shaving creams, makeup and creams. They have been linked to cancer and organ toxicity. Also be on the lookout for these chemicals written out in full: Triethanolamine and diethanolamine.

Triclosan

Commonly found in toothpaste, antibacterial soaps and deodorants, triclosan is an antibacterial chemical that has been shown to affect your thyroid and reproductive hormones such as estrogen. There is also significant evidence to suggest that the substance also causes liver damage.

Parabens

There’s been a lot of buzz about the potential dangers of parabens, but what are they and why are they harmful? Parabens are a type of preservative that prolongs the shelf life of cosmetics and skin care products. These chemicals are widely found in makeup, body washes, shampoos, and deodorants - and some are even found in processed foods!

So what’s the big deal? Not only have these chemicals been linked to cancer and skin damage, but they are also very easily absorbed. In fact, one study found traces of parabens in the breast tissue of 19 out of 20 women studied.

Parabens are not only potentially bad for us, but for the environment too. These chemicals, which are washed down the drain and into the ocean via our sewerage systems, have been found in the bodies of marine mammals too.

For these reasons I personally always go paraben-free! This means avoiding all products containing butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben.

All of our products at EVEDARE are free of all listed harmful chemicals!

Our EVEDARE Eyelash Serum is made from all-natural plant extracts and doesn’t contain potentially harmful chemicals such as parabens. Sign up to our mailing list to be notified when we launch in August!
